Do-It-Yourselfers improperly dispose of at least 200
million gallons of used motor oil nationwide each year. That's the
equivalent of 20 Exxon Valdez spills per year!
One gallon of used motor oil can contaminate one
million gallons of water.
Put your used motor oil in a clean plastic container
with a tight lid.
Never mix used motor oil with anything else, such as
paint, antifreeze, gasoline, solvents or water.
Take your used motor oil to an oil collection
location for recycling.
The Tennessee Used Oil Collection Act of 1993,
enacted to prevent the mismanagement of used oil, makes it unlawful
(except under strictly specified conditions of a valid permit) for any
person to discharge used motor oil where it may harm the
environment. Violation of this law is a Class C misdemeanor
(T.C.A. 68-211-1016).
The following businesses in the Memphis area will
accept used motor oil from the public for recycling. Should you
encounter problems or if a listed location has gone out of business,
please let us know by e-mailing publicworks@cityofmemphis.org  
or calling the Storm Water hotline at 901-529-0237.
Also, some locations may accept used oil filters,
antifreeze and car batteries for proper disposal. Call the business or
