Mayor Willie W. Herenton and Memphis City Council are pleased to announce that the City of Memphis will again sponsor a summer enrichment and employment program for the city's youth. The Memphis Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) for 2008 is a major component of Memphis Youth Achieve-a new effort by the City of Memphis designed to ensure that the needs and aspirations of Memphis' youths are better served year-round.

SYEP 2008 Program Information
Eligibility:
- Resident of City of Memphis
- Youths 14 to 21 are welcomed and encouraged to register.
- Participants shall be selected by lottery.
Program Period:
June 2, 2008 through July 25, 2008 (eight weeks)
Registration Period:
December 17, 2007 through February 9, 2008
Selection by Lottery:
Prospective participants in the Memphis SYEP are chosen by lottery. Success in the lottery does not guarantee participation in the summer program. Eligibility must be verified. Those unsuccessful in the lottery shall be placed on a waiting list, ranked by lottery number, for unfilled positions or new positions which may later come available.
Each registrant will be notified by e-mail whether or not she or he has been successful in the lottery, and, if successful, where and when to report to complete the registration process. Qualification must be documented and verified; and, additional forms must be read and signed by the candidate and the parent/guardian.
Again, if available placements are not completely filled or new positions created, potential candidates will be drawn from the waiting list in lottery number order.
Stipends:
For the eight-week period:
- Fourteen and fifteen year-old participants will receive stipends of $6.00 per hour for 20 hours per week
- Sixteen through twenty-one year-old participants will receive stipends of $6.85 per hour for 30 hours per week
